Neck Pain Physiotherapy in Burnaby
Neck pain can affect sleep, concentration, training, driving, desk work, and overall quality of life. At Driftwood Athletics, we assess the neck in the context of posture, movement, stress, workload, upper back function, and physical capacity so treatment is practical and individualized.
What this is ?
Neck pain is often influenced by more than one factor. Some people develop it after long hours at a desk, while others notice it after training, poor sleep, stress, headaches, previous injury, or long-standing stiffness. Symptoms can stay local to the neck or spread into the upper back, shoulder blade region, or head.
It is useful to think of the neck as part of a larger system rather than an isolated structure. Breathing, rib cage motion, shoulder mechanics, visual demands, stress, and work posture can all influence how sensitive the neck becomes.
Common causes
Common contributors include prolonged desk work, stress-related muscle guarding, limited upper back mobility, poor tolerance to overhead or pressing work, sleep posture, headaches, previous whiplash, and deconditioning.
Symptoms and when to get assessed
Get assessed if neck pain is recurrent, limiting movement, causing headaches, affecting arm symptoms, or making work, sleep, or training harder. Significant trauma, worsening neurological symptoms, or severe unexplained symptoms warrant faster evaluation.
How we assess it
Assessment should look at symptom history, neck movement, upper back mobility, shoulder involvement, work posture, headache patterns, strength, endurance, and whether the issue is more movement-based, load-based, or nerve-related.
How treatment works
Treatment may include graded mobility, strengthening, postural endurance work, breathing and rib cage strategies, ergonomic guidance, exercise modification, manual therapy, and coaching around pacing.
Recovery & return to activity
Most people improve better when they stop thinking in terms of perfect posture and start thinking in terms of movement variety, tolerance, and physical capacity. The right plan should fit the person’s job, sport, and daily routine.
Why Choose Driftwood Athletics
Driftwood can connect treatment to the real-world tasks people want to tolerate better, from desk work to lifting to sport, rather than stopping at temporary symptom relief.
Can neck pain cause headaches?
Yes, neck dysfunction can contribute to some headache patterns.
Is bad posture the whole problem?
Usually no. Tolerance, variability, stress, and strength also matter.
Should I stop training?
Not necessarily. Many people do well with the right modifications.
Can persistent neck pain improve?
Yes, especially when the plan addresses movement, strength, workload, and symptom triggers.
